Autumn Adventures at Wee Chicks: Learning Through the Seasons
As the crisp air sets in and the leaves turn golden, autumn brings a wonderful new rhythm to life at Wee Chicks. This season is bursting with colour, texture, and opportunity — a perfect time for our little ones to explore, learn, and grow.
At Wee Chicks, we believe every season offers its own lessons. From the gentle chill of morning walks to the crunch of leaves under tiny boots, autumn invites curiosity and connection with the world around us. Children learn through play, movement, and hands-on discovery — and there’s no better classroom than nature itself.
Nature-Inspired Learning
Our autumn sessions often begin outdoors. The children love to wander through the garden and nearby green spaces, collecting little treasures — crisp leaves, pinecones, conkers, and twigs. Each find sparks a story, a question, or an imaginative idea:
“Why are some leaves yellow and some still green?”
“Do squirrels really sleep in trees?”
Moments like these are powerful learning experiences. They encourage children to notice changes in their environment, make comparisons, and describe what they see — all early science and language skills in action.
Back inside, the natural materials they collect become tools for counting, sorting, and pattern-making. We might arrange pinecones by size, make leaf rubbings to explore textures, or create simple nature collages. Through these playful activities, children develop fine motor skills and early maths concepts like size, number, and symmetry — without even realising they’re learning.
Being outdoors also helps build emotional wellbeing. The open space gives children the freedom to move, run, and breathe fresh air, which supports their physical health and sense of calm. Nature’s rhythm — slower, more grounded — offers a wonderful counterbalance to the busyness of daily life.
Pumpkin Sensory Play
Pumpkin season is always a highlight at Wee Chicks! The bright colours, interesting shapes, and textures offer endless possibilities for play and exploration.
Our sensory trays often feature pumpkins of different sizes, alongside scoops, spoons, and bowls for children to dig, scoop, and pour. They love feeling the slippery seeds and smooth skin, describing what they notice — “cold!”, “gooey!”, “it smells funny!” — building both vocabulary and sensory awareness.
These seemingly simple moments are full of developmental benefits. Scooping strengthens hand and finger muscles, preparing little hands for writing later on. Exploring textures supports sensory processing, helping children understand how different sensations feel and react. Most importantly, sensory play nurtures curiosity and confidence — learning that it’s okay to get a little messy in the name of discovery.
We’ve also used pumpkins for art! Rolling mini pumpkins in paint and letting them stamp across paper creates beautiful patterns while teaching about cause and effect — what happens when I roll it this way? What colours mix together? Every masterpiece is unique, just like the children who create them.
Storytelling and Seasonal Crafts
Autumn also inspires creativity through storytelling. Our sessions often include stories about woodland creatures, falling leaves, or animals preparing for winter. The children act out stories, use props, or create artwork inspired by what they hear. This not only boosts language and imagination but also emotional understanding — helping them connect with the world around them.
Our craft table is always busy this time of year! Leaf crowns, hedgehog collages, and nature-inspired art are firm favourites. The process of creating helps children develop concentration, coordination, and self-expression. It also gives them a chance to share ideas with friends — “Look, my hedgehog is hiding under the leaves!”
These moments of collaboration and pride are what make early learning so special. We see children supporting one another, offering help, and celebrating each other’s creations — building the foundations for empathy and teamwork.
Embracing the Changing Weather
Autumn isn’t just about sunshine and crisp walks — it also brings rainy days, muddy puddles, and darker evenings. At Wee Chicks, we embrace it all!
A bit of drizzle never stops us from heading outdoors. In fact, puddle-jumping days are often the most joyful. We encourage children to put on their wellies, explore the rain, and talk about what they notice: the sound of raindrops, the smell of wet earth, the way water ripples when they splash.
On cosy indoor days, we bring the season inside with autumn-scented playdough, cinnamon-scented sensory bins, and warm, calm music. These activities support emotional regulation, helping children unwind and find comfort in familiar routines.
Learning to adapt to seasonal changes also helps children build resilience — understanding that weather changes, routines shift, and we can still find joy and playfulness in every situation.
Family Connections and Home Learning
One of the things we love most at Wee Chicks is seeing how our seasonal themes inspire families to continue the learning at home. Parents often share stories of nature walks at the weekend or proudly show us photos of crafts inspired by our sessions.
When home and childcare work together, children feel supported, confident, and connected. These shared experiences reinforce what they learn here — not just academic skills, but a love of exploration, creativity, and togetherness.
Try This at Home: Leaf Lanterns
To keep the autumn magic glowing at home, here’s a simple, beautiful craft for families to try together.
You’ll need:
- A clean glass jar (jam jar or yogurt pot)
- PVA glue or Mod Podge
- A few colourful leaves (pressed flat if possible)
- A paintbrush
- A battery-powered tea light
Instructions:
- Brush a thin layer of glue over the outside of the jar.
- Gently press on the leaves, arranging them however you like.
- Brush another layer of glue over the top to seal them.
- Leave to dry completely.
- Place a battery tea light inside and watch it glow.
This simple activity encourages creativity, fine motor control, and appreciation of nature. When the lanterns glow in the evening, they remind children of their outdoor adventures — and how beautiful the world can be when we take time to notice it.
Learning Through the Seasons
At Wee Chicks, we believe every season is a teacher. Autumn, with its changing colours and cosy atmosphere, encourages children to slow down, explore, and observe the world with fresh eyes.
From pumpkin play to leaf art and storytelling, every experience helps build confidence, creativity, and curiosity — the foundations for lifelong learning. And just as nature changes, so do our children — growing, adapting, and discovering new ways to connect with the world around them.
We feel so grateful to share these moments with our families and community. Here’s to more muddy boots, glowing lanterns, and laughter-filled days this autumn!
