Helping Children Transition Back to Nursery, Preschool or Primary School: 10 Simple Ways to Make September Easier

The end of summer holidays can bring a mix of excitement and nerves for both children and parents. Whether your little one is starting nursery for the first time, moving into preschool, or taking the big step into Primary 1, change can feel overwhelming.

At Wee Chicks, we know that every child adjusts at their own pace. With a little preparation, patience and reassurance, you can help your child feel confident and ready for their new adventure.

1. Start Your Routine Early

A week or two before the new term begins, gradually move bedtime and wake-up times closer to your usual routine. Predictable routines help children feel safe and make those early mornings much less stressful.

2. Talk Positively About the Change

Children often take their emotional cues from adults. Speak positively about nursery or school, focusing on the exciting things they’ll experience:

  • Making new friends
  • Playing with new toys
  • Reading stories
  • Outdoor play
  • Fun activities and learning

It’s completely normal if they’re feeling nervous too. Let them know that lots of children feel the same way.

3. Read Books About Starting School

Stories are a wonderful way to prepare children for change. Reading together opens conversations about worries, excitement and what they can expect.

Ask questions like:

  • “What do you think the little boy is feeling?”
  • “What are you looking forward to most?”
  • “What would help if you felt nervous?”

4. Practise Independence

Small skills make a big difference to children’s confidence.

Practise things like:

  • Putting on coats
  • Using the toilet independently
  • Washing hands
  • Opening lunch boxes
  • Tidying away toys
  • Carrying their own bag

Celebrate effort rather than expecting perfection.

5. Visit if You Can

If possible, visit the nursery or school before the first day. Seeing the environment beforehand helps make it feel familiar rather than unknown.

If a visit isn’t possible, look at photos together on the school’s website or social media.

6. Expect Big Emotions

Some children run through the door happily.

Others cry.

Some seem absolutely fine until they get home.

All of these reactions are completely normal.

Transitions are emotionally demanding, even when children are excited. Give them plenty of opportunities to rest, play and talk after their day.

7. Keep Goodbyes Short and Calm

It can be tempting to stay longer if your child is upset, but calm, confident goodbyes usually help children settle more quickly.

A simple hug, reassuring words and letting staff take over often works best.

8. Avoid Overloading the Calendar

Starting somewhere new takes a lot of emotional energy.

If possible, keep evenings and weekends fairly relaxed during the first couple of weeks so children have time to recharge.

9. Celebrate the Little Wins

Every achievement deserves recognition.

Maybe they:

  • Stayed all morning.
  • Made a new friend.
  • Ate their lunch.
  • Tried something new.
  • Joined in with singing.

These small successes build confidence over time.

10. Remember That Every Child Is Different

Some children settle immediately.

Others need several weeks.

There is no “right” timeline.

The most important thing is providing consistency, reassurance and plenty of love while they adjust.
